The bells of Saint Nicholas

The bells of Saint Nicholas

Rectifiers, fuses and solenoids - these are a few of the electrical components that have to be in good repair for bells to operate properly. But to brothers Gene and Jim Senderak, fixing the bells at our church is more than just the sum of its parts.  To them, because of what the bells represent, it is also a labor of love.

According to Jim, "bells are used to call us to worship, and also ring out to let everyone know when something of importance is going on inside of the church.  Of our three bells, only the large one has been working for about the past two years.  I remember how it was when we moved to this church, when we had no bells for a very long time, till the first large bell was bought.  Now with only that one in repair, I figured it would only be a matter of time till it would also go on the fritz, bringing back the silence."

Jim took on the project of bringing all of the bells in the tower back to life.  Engaging his brother Gene, who had helped to maintain the bells in years past, the two went to work.  Gene was able to diagnose and replace the necessary components in the circuit box, while Jim ordered parts from the Verdin Bell company in Cincinnatti, for what needed to be replaced inside the bells themselves.  The brothers worked together putting everything in place and made the final adjustments. "It brings joy to our hearts to hear all of our bells ringing together with such a strong resonance," said Jim.

Also, the navy blue glass panels,  that replaced the amber ones in the upper section a few years ago, were too opague not allowing any glow to shine through from the one spotlight in place.  Fortunately, a new 500 watt halogen light assembly provides enough power, enabling the colored panels to once again glow gracefully against the night sky.

Jim concluded by saying, "We were hoping to have all of this work done by Pascha. Fortunately, the Lord blessed us with some times of warmer winter weather, and by the grace of God, we were able to accomplish this task, for His glory, ahead of schedule."
